Flood tide

Yachtsman familiar with St Quay Portrieux will also be aware of the excellent purpose-built facilities at the marina. This has not always been the case. Before the new buildings appeared there was just a large temporary structure with two showers, toilets and several washbasins.

We’d had an exhilarating cruise down from Portrieux, arriving in good time for a hot shower. Under the stream of hot water, I must have lost track of time, which is where it all went horribly wrong.

I didn’t notice the lid from a previous user’s gel bottle on the shelf, or see it fall on to the floor and block the drain hole.

Eventually, when I’d finished, I was standing in a few inches of water, and so was everyone else. The entire toilet block was flooded, the water from the shower tray having cascaded throughout the building.

It had overflowed through the main door into the car park, causing much amusement for passers-by.

Stepping from the cubicle, I was greeted by a line of faces covered in shaving foam and with murder in their eyes as they sloshed around.

In a sad, feeble attempt to disguise my nationality I tried to mutter something that might have sounded German, before beating a hasty retreat. • Steve King
